Dimetapp Cold & Allergy Elixir contains phenylephrine hydrochloride and brompheniramine maleate.
Phenylephrine Hydrochloride is a decongestant that reduces the swelling (blocked nose) and secretions (runny nose) in the nasal passages and sinuses allowing the passages behind the nose and above the eyes to clear.
Brompheniramine is an antihistamine that relieves allergy and hay fever symptoms. It can cause drowsiness.
Active ingredients per 5ml: | |
Brompheniramine maleate | 2mg |
Phenylephrine hydrochloride | 5mg |
Also contains: sodium benzoate, saccharin sodium, alcohol, sorbitol (16.8g/40ml).
Products contain sorbitol may have a laxative effect or cause diarrhoea.
Children 6 years to under 12 years: Give 7.5ml every 6 to 8 hours when necessary. Do not exceed 4 doses in 24 hours.
Adults & children 12 years & over: Take 10ml every 6 to 8 hours when necessary. Do not exceed 4 doses in 24 hours.
Do not use in children under 6 years old.
For children 6 to under 12 years, consult a healthcare professional before use.
Do not take longer than a few days, unless directed by a doctor. If symptoms persist for more than 48 hours or are accompanied by fever, discontinue use and consult a doctor.

Phenylephrine hydrochloride may cause sleeplessness in some people.
Brompheniramine may cause drowsiness or sedation in some people. Be cautious about driving a vehicle or operating machinery within 8 hours of taking this medicine. If still affected do not drive a vehicle or operate machinery. Avoid alcohol.
Keep to recommended dose. If an overdose is taken or suspected, ring the Poison Information Centre New Zealand 0800 764 766 or go to a hospital straight away even if you feel well because of the risk of delayed serious liver damage.
