Solgar 5-HTP provides 100mg of 5-Hydroxytryptophan as well as valerian root, vitamin B6 and magnesium per capsule to help improve mood, manage stress, anxiety and nervous tension.
5-HTP is a chemical that our body requires to produce serotonin, a neurotransmitter, which allows nerve cells to communicate with each other. In the central nervous system serotonin is involved in the regulation of sleep, mood, appetite, temperature balance, sexual behaviour and pain sensation.
Dietary supplementation with 5-HTP helps raise serotonin levels in the brain. Since serotonin helps regulate mood and behavior, 5-HTP may have a positive effect on sleep, mood, anxiety, appetite and pain sensation.
Low magnesium level can result in problems with nerve conduction and predisposition to stress.
Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) has been used for centuries as a medicinal herb for to ease insomnia and anxiety. Germany's Commission E approved valerian as an effective mild sedative and the USA FDA listed valerian as "Generally Recognised as Safe". It is believed that valerian works by increasing the levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. GABA lowers the activity of excitatory brain cells, making you more relaxed.
Vitamin B6 may enhance the conversion of amino acid tryptophan to serotonin.
