Selenium is an essential trace mineral that plays an important role in supporting our immune system. It is also part of our body's detoxification and antioxidant defence system preventing damage to cells and tissues. Selenium deficiency can occur in areas where the soil content of selenium is low. New Zealand soil contains relatively low level of selenium.
Selenium enhances glutathione activity, as well as facilitating glutathione peroxidase synthesis. Glutathione is a key antiodixant ingredient required for the detoxification of numerous substances in the liver. Glutathione peroxidase is an enzyme that catalyses the reduction of hydroxy peroxides and hydroxyl radicals by glutathione.
There are 2 important phases to liver detoxification, Phase I and Phase II. During Phase I detoxification, toxins are directly neutralised, or converted to more toxic intermediate forms that are then processed by Phase II detoxification. Glutathione conjugation is the method in which approximately 60% of all toxins are neutralised during phase II of the liver's detoxification process.
Selenium works synergistically with vitamin E in the protection of fats and cell membranes.
There is evidence that low blood selenium levels are associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer. Clinical studies have found daily selenium supplementation reduces the overall incidence of prostate cancer in men with normal baseline prostate specific antigen levels and low selenium blood levels.
